The Full Armor of God

 PROTECTED AND CLOTHED IN THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD

The Full Armor of God is described in Ephesians 6:10–18. Paul uses the picture of a soldier’s armor to explain how Christians can stand firm spiritually against temptation, deception, discouragement, and evil.

The 6 pieces of the Armor of God

The Belt of Truth — Ephesians 6:14
“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…” —
Ephesians 6:14, NIV
Meaning:
Truth holds everything together. We protect ourselves by knowing God’s truth, believing it, speaking truth, and refusing to be controlled by lies.  

Body placement:  a belt is worn around your waist, it holds things together and binds things around your waist symbolizing truth will hold God’s truth to your body, this belt is not a physical belt but symbolizes truth being girded around your waist at all times.  

The Breastplate of Righteousness — Ephesians 6:14
“…with the breastplate of righteousness in place…” — Ephesians 6:14, NIV

Meaning: A breastplate protects a soldier’s vital organs. Spiritually, righteousness protects our hearts. We seek to live according to God’s ways rather than allowing sin to control our lives. As long as we keep righteousness in our hearts nothing else can penetrate it

Body Placement:  a breastplate covers and protects our hearts. If we have God and his righteousness in our hearts and it is protected by a breastplate of steel. 

The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace — Ephesians 6:15
“…and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” — Ephesians 6:15, NIV

Meaning: The gospel gives us a firm foundation. Because we have peace with God through Christ, we can stand securely and remain ready to share the good news with others. 

Body Placement:  Shoes are worn on our feets, our feet allow us to stand.  We can stand firm on the word and gospel of peace. 

The Shield of Faith — Ephesians 6:16
“…take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” — Ephesians 6:16, NIV

Meaning: Faith protects us when doubts, fear, temptation, accusations, and discouragement come against us. Instead of believing what circumstances tell us, we continue trusting who God is and what He has promised. 

Body Placement: A shield is placed on a person’s arm. It protects a soldier from arrows and you have to hold it up to protect yourself and you have to trust that your shield will protect you just as you trust in faith in God to protect you. 

The Helmet of Salvation — Ephesians 6:17
“Take the helmet of salvation…” — Ephesians 6:17, NIV

Meaning: The helmet represents protection of the mind. Remembering our salvation—who we are in Christ and the hope we have in Him—helps guard our thinking against hopelessness, condemnation, and deception.

Body Placement: A helmet is worn on one’s head, your brain and mind are protected from harm, sin and allows one to receive salvation and resist the wiles and beliefs of the devil. 

The Sword of the Spirit — Ephesians 6:17
“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” — Ephesians 6:17, NIV

Meaning: God’s Word is the weapon specifically named in the armor. Jesus demonstrated this when Satan tempted Him: He repeatedly responded with Scripture—“It is written…” (Matthew 4:1–11).  We need to keep our sword ( the bible and God’s words) with us and in our hearts to fight back when, not if, the devil attacks us. 

Body placement:  The sword is held in your dominant hand. It is held there to strike down something or someone that is offending you. The sword in this case is the bible, the bible is a weapon we can use against the devil and his cunning words and schemes. 

And don’t overlook prayer

Immediately after describing the armor, Paul says:

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…” — Ephesians 6:18, NIV

Prayer isn’t usually numbered as a separate piece of armor, but it is essential to the entire passage. We aren’t being told to fight spiritual battles through our own strength. Paul begins the teaching by saying:

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” — Ephesians 6:10, NIV

So you can remember the Armor of God this way:

TRUTH — guards against lies
RIGHTEOUSNESS — guards the heart
PEACE — gives firm footing
FAITH — extinguishes attacks
SALVATION — guards the mind
GOD’S WORD — gives us spiritual truth to fight with
PRAYER — keeps us dependent upon and connected to God

And the purpose of putting on the armor is stated repeatedly in the passage: so that we can stand.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” — Ephesians 6:11, NIV
